“Enhancing prevention and inspection capabilities in the context of road accidents” and “restructuring the GNR Traffic Unit to increase its operational capacity” are two measures proposed by the government to reverse the rising trend of road accidents in Portugal.
The government, led by Luís Montenegro, also plans to develop the National Strategic Plan to Combat Road Accidents, titled “Rota +Segura.”
The program no longer includes the National Road Safety Strategy – Vision Zero 2030, which aimed to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries by 50% by 2030. This strategy was prepared by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) and presented to the socialist government at the end of 2023 and carried over to the previous AD administration.
In the realm of road safety, the government also seeks to bring ANSR closer to citizens and security forces through the “simplification of payment and procedural bureaucracy related to traffic offenses” and the enhancement “of data interoperability between security forces and ANSR.”
The program of the XXV Constitutional Government, following the legislative elections on May 18 won by the AD coalition (PSD/CDS), was delivered today to the Assembly of the Republic by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Carlos Abreu Amorim.
The document was approved in the Council of Ministers on Thursday and will be discussed in the Assembly of the Republic on Tuesday and Wednesday.
