Mainland Portugal records more than 800 occurrences by 18:00.

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) recorded a total of 815 incidents by 6:00 PM, stated operations officer Rui Oliveira. The majority were floods, accounting for 506 cases, followed by 103 road clearings, 97 fallen trees, 54 structural collapses, and 50 landslides.

Oliveira noted that most incidents occurred in the Porto Metropolitan Area (231), followed by the Algarve region (149), and the Aveiro region (96).

A total of 902 ground resources and 2,291 personnel were deployed to address the 815 incidents, Oliveira added.

By 6:00 PM, the ANEPC reported one fatality and 28 injuries, two of them serious, in the Algarve due to an “extreme wind event.” The decreasing number of incidents indicates an improvement in weather conditions, as forecasted by the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), Oliveira mentioned.

From 2:00 PM on Wednesday to 5:00 PM today, the ANEPC noted 3,757 incidents related to adverse weather conditions due to depression Claudia affecting mainland Portugal.

The most affected sub-regions were Setúbal Peninsula (642 incidents), Greater Lisbon (397), and Algarve (479), the authority revealed in a four-day assessment of severe winds and rainfall.

The main types of incidents recorded were floods (2,032), fallen trees (679), road clearings (435), structural collapses (325), landslides (263), and a few land (14) and water rescues (nine).

Besides the fatal incident in Albufeira and the couple who died in Fernão Ferro, Seixal, Setúbal district, the ANEPC reported “32 displaced people” in Abrantes, Salvaterra de Magos (Santarém district), Seixal, and Pombal (Leiria).

In Albufeira, Faro district, a “strong wind event” caused the roof collapse at Edan Resort restaurant, injuring around twenty people, while at a campsite, there were two injuries and one fatality, the ANEPC added.

“11,424 responders, supported by 4,430 vehicles, were involved in addressing these incidents,” ANEPC reported.

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority emphasized that “the impact of adverse weather conditions can be minimized by adopting appropriate precautionary behaviors” and recommended preventive measures, particularly in historically vulnerable areas.

The IPMA issued an orange alert for districts Braga, Faro, Setúbal, and Beja due to heavy rain.

The entire western and southern coast of Portugal is under a yellow alert due to sea agitation.
