The formal announcement of the candidacy has yet to be scheduled, but it already carries a slogan inspired by former U.S. President Donald Trump: ‘Make Faro Great Again’.
The party Chega has already showcased its candidacy through billboards across Faro, featuring the candidate alongside the party leader, similar to displays in other regions of the country.
Pedro Pinto, a 48-year-old businessman, serves as an aide in the party’s National Directorate, overseeing the general secretariat.
Pinto was elected as a member of parliament under Chega in the legislative elections of 2022, 2024, and 2025, consistently representing the Faro electoral district.
Since 2022, Pedro Pinto has led the Chega parliamentary group, consistently running as the sole candidate. His most recent election took place on June 25, where he secured 85% of the votes.
Apart from the parliamentary leader, several Chega deputies are vying in the local elections set for October 12.
In the 2021 local elections, Chega fielded Custódio Guerreiro for the Faro Municipal Council.
The race for the Faro Municipal Council presidency, under PSD control since 2009, currently has three contenders aiming to replace social democrat Rogério Bacalhau, who is ineligible for re-election due to term limit laws.
The current candidates identified are social democrat Cristóvão Norte, socialist António Miguel Pina, and communist Duarte Baltazar.
In the 2021 local elections, the PSD-led coalition won with an absolute majority, capturing 47.76% of the votes and electing six of the nine councilors, while the PS came second with 30.58%, securing the remaining three seats.
The Faro Municipal Assembly comprises 31 members: 27 directly elected and four parish council presidents. The PSD and PS each hold 10 seats, followed by CDU with three seats, CDS-PP with two, and Chega, BE, MPT, IL, and PPM each with one, alongside an independent former PAN representative.
