A man was arrested for domestic violence in Portalegre after exhibiting “very controlling and jealous behavior” towards his partner, going as far as controlling her friendships and social media, and encouraging their minor daughters to insult their mother. However, after being presented in court, he was released.
The Prosecutor of the Republic of Portalegre indicated that “following the issuance of an arrest warrant, the Public Ministry presented on July 1, the first judicial questioning, a defendant accused of the crime of domestic violence.”
“From the summer of 2018 until May 2025, the victim and the defendant lived in conditions akin to those of spouses, sharing the same residence,” the statement, released this Friday, read.
According to the prosecutor, “from the beginning of the relationship, the defendant consumed alcohol in excess and, due to this, always adopted a very controlling and jealous behavior towards the victim, opposing, for example, her going to the hairdresser or manicure.”
In addition, the man monitored the victim’s phone and had access to the unlock code to see “all messages and contacts made and received,” even going so far as to “block the victim’s friends on social media.”
“It was also common for the defendant to insult the victim inside the home in front of their daughters and encourage the minor daughters to insult their mother, even assaulting the victim,” the prosecutor noted.
After being presented to a judicial interrogation, the man was released but subject to the coercive measures of being “prohibited from approaching the victim, her residence, and her workplace within a radius of 300 meters, a measure which should be controlled through technical means of remote monitoring.”
A 27-year-old man was detained by the GNR for exerting physical and psychological domestic violence against a 26-year-old woman, his former partner, in the municipality of Arronches, district of Portalegre, the Guard revealed today.

The man is also prohibited from contacting the victim by any means or through another person and from acquiring or possessing weapons, and must surrender any he possesses to the police station.
He is also subject to weekly appearances at a police station and must “undergo treatment related to alcohol issues, including medical consultation and any necessary subsequent medical treatment.”
The investigation is being led by the Public Ministry of Portalegre.
