A Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has arrested the suspect accused of murdering a 50-year-old man in the early hours of Thursday, in the village of Belas, Sintra, Lisbon. The alleged assailant was apprehended on the same day the crime took place.
The suspect, aged 38, reportedly attacked the victim in the shoulder blade with a knife “of large dimensions” following a brawl between the two, near the suspect’s home.
The victim was transported by relatives to Hospital Prof. Doutor Fernando (Amadora-Sintra), but succumbed to the severity of the injuries.
In a statement released on Friday, the PJ noted that “the motivation for the crime is related to previous conflicts between the assailant and the victim’s family.”
Speaking to the Lusa news agency, a PJ source indicated that the detained suspect would “most likely today” be presented to the judicial authorities for questioning and the application of preventive measures.
Another man, who was also at the scene, was “hit on the head” and required hospitalization.
A source from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the Public Security Police explained that the alert for an assault involving at least three men was received around 1 a.m. on Thursday.
The knife used in the crime was located at the scene on Rua das Margaridas, in the Bairro do Pego Longo, Belas, and was seized.
