The Territorial Command of the GNR in Guarda reported that officers responded immediately to a forest fire alert in Reigada, where they conducted police operations that led to the identification and interception of the suspect.
The arrest was made by members of the Territorial Post of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo in the district of Guarda.
During the operation, the GNR discovered that the detainee was performing agricultural work using an excavator, which sparked a fire that quickly got out of control.
The GNR stated, “The fire was, however, promptly extinguished by the individual himself.”
The suspect has been named an official defendant, and the case has been referred to the Judicial Court of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo.
The GNR reminded the public that burnings are one of the leading causes of fires in Portugal and that they are prohibited whenever there is a very high or maximum level of rural fire danger, requiring authorization or prior communication at other times.
