A 36-year-old man has been arrested by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a prohibited weapon in Barreiro.
In a statement released Thursday, the PJ reported that the incident occurred on September 11, following a boat trip from Lisbon to Barreiro, involving a 28-year-old male victim.
The investigation, conducted by the Setúbal Criminal Investigation Department, revealed that both men boarded at Terreiro do Paço headed for Barreiro, with no interaction during the journey.
Upon disembarking at the Barreiro ferry terminal, the suspect pursued the victim and used a “sharp weapon to inflict a neck wound.” The attacker then fled, while the victim received immediate medical attention and was transported to a hospital.
Soon after, the suspect was intercepted by the Public Security Police (PSP) in the Moita area and was initially arrested solely for possession of a prohibited weapon, which had been used in the attempted murder.
The man was subsequently released and instructed to appear in court the following day.
Further investigations by the PJ revealed that the suspect regularly traveled by boat between Lisbon and Barreiro, and during these trips, he allegedly randomly attacked other victims using the same sharp weapon.
The suspect, now detained by the PJ, “will be present for a first interrogation to determine appropriate coercive measures.”
