Man caught with explosive material after invading property in Outeiro

The National Republican Guard (GNR) arrested a 62-year-old man on June 12 in Cabeceiras de Basto for possession of illegal weapons and explosive materials, as announced on Tuesday.

The arrest followed a report of trespassing on private property in the parish of Outeiro, according to a statement from the security force.

GNR officers attended the site, where they conducted police inquiries leading to the suspect’s interception near the property.

During the operation, the individual attempted to access a bag he was carrying, containing a modified firearm, but was promptly subdued by officers despite physical resistance.

The man was detained, and a search of his residence resulted in the seizure of a firearm carrying bag; a sawed-off shotgun (prohibited weapon); three knives; two cartridges; two bottles containing a fuel mixture; two bottles with fuel mixture and a pyrotechnic firecracker attached; an improvised pyrotechnic explosive device; a plastic bottle with fuel mixture; and a bandolier.

The operation was reinforced by an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team from the Braga Territorial Command, which collected the explosive materials.

The detainee appeared before the Judicial Court of Cabeceiras de Basto and was remanded in custody. He was transported to Braga Prison.
