A 29-year-old man has been arrested by the Judiciary Police in Moimenta da Beira, within the Viseu district, on suspicion of setting two forest fires between August 16 and 18.
In a statement, the PJ noted that “the fires consumed areas of forest cover, mainly consisting of underbrush, chestnut trees, oaks, and apple trees.”
The fires “endangered several urban buildings of considerable value” and were prevented from being consumed only due to the rapid intervention of firefighting resources, including locals, forest fire brigades, and firefighters.
The detainee will appear for a first interrogation to determine the application of coercive measures.
