A 29-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday, August 20, for drug trafficking in the municipality of São João da Pesqueira, Viseu. He was found in possession of four cannabis plants and 8.6 doses of hashish.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Republican Guard (GNR) reported that the arrest was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Unit (NIC) of Moimenta da Beira following a tip related to drug trafficking.

Subsequently, police conducted operations which led to a house search warrant and a vehicle search.

The operation resulted in the suspect’s arrest and the seizure of four cannabis plants, 8.6 doses of hashish, a knife, a baton, and a mobile phone.

The GNR noted that the operation was supported by personnel from the São João da Pesqueira Territorial Post.

The detainee was named as a defendant, and the details were communicated to the Judicial Court of Moimenta da Beira.

According to the 2024 Annual Report on Combating Drug Trafficking in Portugal, released in March by the Judicial Police (PJ), last year saw 4,448 hashish seizures, making it the most seized drug.

“In 2024, 7,343.91 kg of cannabis (hashish) were seized, marking an 80.6% decrease compared to 2023, when 37,945.48 kg of the substance were confiscated,” the report states.

The GNR was responsible for the seizure of 45.8% of all cannabis (hashish) apprehended, followed by the PJ with 31.8%, the Public Security Police (PSP) with 15.6%, and the Maritime Police with 6.7%.
