
A 54-year-old man died on Saturday afternoon after being struck by a tree while cutting wood in Covelas parish, in the municipality of Trofa, confirmed by the Notícias ao Minuto with a source from the National Republican Guard (GNR).
The man was attended to at the scene by the Trofa Volunteer Firefighters and the Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) team from the Famalicão Hospital, but death was declared at the scene.
According to the local newspaper O Notícias da Trofa, the victim was a firefighter with the Santo Tirso Volunteers and an employee of the local hospital.
On social networks, the Santo Tirso Volunteer Firefighters announced the death of one of their workers and extended condolences to the family.
“Today is a sad day. One of our own has died. It is with deep sorrow that we inform you that our firefighter João Camões, 54, passed away today. At our station, João was known as ‘Camões father’,” the corporation stated.
“To his son, Rui Camões, also one of our firefighters, and to the entire family, we extend our deep sympathy and solidarity. We pay tribute to João Camões and thank him for his dedication and service. He was always where he was needed,” they added.
At the scene, alongside the Trofa Volunteer Firefighters and VMER, was also the National Republican Guard (GNR), which handled the incident.
