A man went missing on Tuesday at Parede Beach in Cascais.
The alert was raised at 4:30 p.m. by locals who noticed someone struggling in the water, according to statements from Parede Firefighters to SIC Notícias.
Search efforts are currently underway by land and sea.
Marine searches are expected to be suspended shortly due to turbulent sea conditions, which are hampering operations.
Parede Firefighters have mobilized three rescue vehicles, and a vessel from the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos is also participating in the search.
Due to the rough seas, the districts of Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Beja, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga have been under a yellow warning since 6:00 a.m. today, which will remain in effect until 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
The yellow warning, the least severe, is issued when there is a risk for certain activities dependent on weather conditions.
On Monday, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) stated that waves up to four meters high are expected along the western coast on Tuesday, potentially reaching a maximum height of up to seven meters. This unusual August phenomenon is attributed to the presence of post-tropical cyclone ERIN.
In light of worsening maritime conditions, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) and the National Maritime Authority (AMN) have issued warnings to the public, advising preventive measures.
The AMN urged beachgoers to exercise caution when visiting beaches, choose those with permanent surveillance, adhere to beach flag signals and instructions from lifeguards and other supervisory personnel, keep a constant watch on children, and avoid standing under cliffs.
