In August, a suspect was extradited to Portugal and presented for a preliminary judicial hearing, currently being held in pre-trial detention, according to the Polícia Judiciária (PJ).
The man, a foreign national, is suspected of murdering a woman, also a foreign national, in the municipality of Alenquer, Lisbon district.
The victim’s body was discovered on April 8 near the Estrada Nacional 1, in Marés, Alenquer, and was initially unidentified.
“Following autopsy results revealing the victim had been suffocated to death with the use of physical force, a connection between the victim and the suspect was established,” the PJ announced in a statement.
According to the PJ, “the assailant, aged 58, and the victim, aged 46, had entered the country in 2024 and led a precarious and itinerant life.”
During the investigation, the PJ concluded that the suspect had fled to the Czech Republic, prompting the Public Prosecutor’s Office to issue an European arrest warrant.
The suspect’s location and arrest, achieved in cooperation with Czech police authorities, were announced two weeks after the body was found.
