A 45-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday at Faro’s Gago Coutinho Airport under an international arrest warrant issued by Interpol. The UK resident had been sought since 2023.
The suspect was wanted “by Zimbabwean authorities for crimes against the state, embezzlement, and theft of fiduciary assets,” according to a statement from the Public Security Police (PSP) released to newsrooms on Wednesday.
The note further indicated that the man “was traveling to Portugal with his family for vacation”.
On the same day, the PSP’s Foreigners and Border Control Unit detained “two foreign nationals who were in the country illegally” and issued “notifications for the voluntary departure of two other foreign nationals” during an inspection of an illegally occupied property in the city.
The government plans to increase the residency period required for obtaining citizenship in Portugal (from five to seven or ten years, depending on whether they are from Portuguese-speaking countries or not). It also foresees the possibility of revoking nationality for those naturalized for less than ten years who are sentenced to imprisonment of five years or more for serious crimes.

Regarding the attribution of original nationality to descendants of foreign residents in Portugal, the proposed amendment to the nationality law now requires a legal residency period of three years.
The Chega party’s bill, which also progressed to the specialty committee, proposes “the loss of nationality acquired through naturalization or when there is dual nationality, in cases where the individual commits acts that seriously violate sovereignty, national security, or the essential principles of the rule of law.”

Immigrant associations today confronted the Minister of the Presidency about the lack of government dialogue, highlighting that new legislative proposals on migration policy were presented without consulting key stakeholders.
