The Judiciary Police (PJ) announced on Tuesday the arrest of a 33-year-old man for the suspected attempted aggravated homicide in a domestic violence context, which occurred on Monday night in Gouveia.
In a statement sent to newsrooms, the PJ indicated that the suspect “had been subjecting his wife to physical and psychological abuse” over the past year.
“The incidents, investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department of Guarda, took place following another heated argument when the man was preparing to assault the woman with a bladed weapon,” the authority explained.
At that moment, “a relative of the woman intervened between the couple and was injured in the arm.”
According to the PJ, this relative required treatment at the emergency department of Hospital Sousa Martins in Guarda but is “not in danger.”
The perpetrator was eventually located with the assistance of the Public Security Police of Gouveia and arrested outside the act of committing the crime.
The man will appear for the first judicial questioning to determine appropriate precautionary measures.
The inquiry is being led by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Gouveia.
Seven Dead in Domestic Violence Context in the First Three Months of the Year
Earlier this month, it was noted that seven people died in the context of domestic violence during the first three months of the year. Furthermore, between 2020 and March 2025, these deaths accounted for nearly 25% of all homicide investigations.
The statistics show that a total of 588 inquiries were investigated by the PJ, with 145 of these related to homicide in a domestic violence context, representing 24.65% of the total.
In the first three months of the year alone, the PJ recorded 41 homicide inquiries, of which six occurred in the context of domestic violence.
In these six inquiries, there were seven victims, six female and one male, although the data does not specify how many victims were minors.
Geographically, in the first three months of the year, two domestic violence homicide inquiries pertained to Setúbal, another two to Lisbon, and one each to Porto and Braga.
In this type of crime, from 2020 to the first quarter of 2025, bladed weapons were the most commonly used, identified in 51 inquiries, followed by firearms in 37 inquiries, and physical force, often through asphyxiation, in 26 inquiries.
