A 46-year-old man was arrested by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Funchal in the early hours of Wednesday, October 8, on suspicion of attempted qualified homicide, possession of a prohibited weapon, and a crime committed with a weapon.
A PJ statement reveals that “the suspect encountered the victim, a 44-year-old man with whom he had longstanding disputes” and had previously assaulted him using a knife.
This time, the suspect inflicted “two stab wounds to the right side of the victim’s rib cage, puncturing his liver.”
“The victim, in life-threatening condition, was assisted and taken to Hospital Nélio Mendonça, where he underwent surgery and remains hospitalized,” the statement reads.
The PJ adds that the suspect, who was released less than six months ago from Funchal Prison after serving a sentence for robbery, was located and arrested following “the gathering of sufficient evidence for the crimes committed.”
The suspect “has an extensive criminal record and has already served prison sentences for violent crimes, including robbery and serious bodily harm” and will appear for the first judicial interrogation at the Tribunal do Funchal for the application of coercive measures.
