A 49-year-old South African man was rescued on Thursday after reportedly suffering a cardiac arrest aboard a cruise ship approximately 14.8 km south of Funchal port.
The National Maritime Authority reported in a statement that “the victim was promptly attended to by the ship’s doctor” before being transported to Funchal port by the Lifeboat Station crew.
Upon arrival at the port, he received further assistance from a Rapid Intervention Medical Team (EMIR) of the Regional Civil Protection Service and from members of the Humanitarian Association of Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters.
He was then “taken to a hospital facility.”
The Local Command of the Funchal Maritime Police handled the incident.
