A 44-year-old man was rescued this Thursday after falling in a rocky area near the Chapel of Boa Nova in Leça de Palmeira, Matosinhos.
The National Maritime Authority (AMN) reported in a statement that after receiving an alert around 10:30 a.m. via the emergency number 112, responders determined that the victim was conscious at the scene.
However, he suffered “multiple fractures in his upper limbs” and was “promptly assisted by INEM personnel.”
Subsequently, the man was transported by firefighters to a hospital. The operation involved personnel from the Leixões Maritime Police Local Command and the ‘SeaWatch’ project.
Lifeguards from the Bathing Rescue System of Matosinhos, the Humanitarian Association of Matosinhos and Leça de Palmeira, and also INEM were called to the scene.
The incident was managed by the Leixões Maritime Police Local Command.

Earlier this week, another man fell from a cliff at João de Arens beach in Portimão on Tuesday. The victim was assisted by crew members of the Ferragudo Lifeboat Station.
The Maritime Authority was alerted at 1:37 p.m. that “a man had fallen from an inaccessible area.”
Upon arrival, where Portimão’s Maritime Police Local Command, crew members of Ferragudo Lifeboat Station, and the Humanitarian Association of Portimão Volunteer Firefighters were present, responders determined “the victim had fallen to the beach sand and received prompt assistance.”
He was transported to the Portimão Marina and then to a hospital. The Portimão Maritime Police Local Command managed the incident.
The bathing season officially started on June 1 and this year there are 10 more monitored beaches, totaling 605 beaches under surveillance, according to the Government.

According to the National Maritime Authority’s latest report from May 1 to May 31, 2025, one month after the start of the bathing season, there have already been 14 rescues, 58 first aid actions, and two drowning deaths at Portuguese beaches.
The two fatalities occurred at a beach that was not monitored at the time of the incidents.
