“The suspect allegedly started the fire using direct flame during the night in an isolated area, utilizing fuel for the purpose,” stated the police in a communiqué sent to newsrooms.
The police noted that the high temperatures at the time “enhanced the rapid spread of the fire, endangering forests and homes.”
“The fire did not escalate further due to the prompt intervention of the firefighters stationed, at this time of year, in the locality of Barranco do Velho,” the statement adds.
According to the police, the detained individual had previously been investigated for similar crimes and is now facing a preliminary judicial hearing for the imposition of detention measures.
