A 44-year-old man, accused of committing domestic violence, resisting and coercing a public official, and dangerously driving a road vehicle, has been brought before a judicial interrogation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The West Lisbon judicial district disclosed that he is now subject to pre-trial detention.
The defendant and the victim were married in Brazil, their country of origin, and have resided in Portugal since 2017 with their two now-adult daughters, as stated in a released statement.
The individual is alleged to have exhibited a jealous and controlling attitude towards his wife, frequently questioning her about her communications. A regular excessive alcohol consumer, he reportedly becomes physically and verbally aggressive under its influence.
An incident occurred on the night of May 11th, when, after drinking, the man initiated a confrontation with his wife, threatening to kill her and commit suicide while handling an object she believed to be a box cutter due to the noise it made.
The victim managed to contact the GNR, who attended the scene. Although the man initially fled, he returned approximately 30 minutes later.
Upon noticing that the GNR was still present, he drove his vehicle at high speed towards their patrol car, narrowly avoiding a collision when a police officer made a quick evasive maneuver. He then fled at high speed, ignoring the police’s orders to stop and performing several dangerous maneuvers.
Following the judicial interrogation on May 13th, the court imposed pre-trial detention and prohibited the suspect from contacting the victim, even while incarcerated, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The inquiry is being conducted by the Cascais branch of the DIAP (Department of Investigation and Penal Action).
