A 33-year-old foreign national, convicted by French judicial authorities for co-authoring crimes of robbery and physical assault, has been detained by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in Lisbon.
The authorities disclosed in a statement sent to newsrooms this Wednesday that the man was sentenced to four years in prison for the crime committed in France.
In 2018, the now-detained individual entered an apartment after breaking a window with another suspect, who was detained “shortly after the events.”
Inside the residence, the men assaulted “a 74-year-old senior, demanding money and managing to steal an amount of 100 euros.”
The suspects eventually fled the scene when they realized the alarm had been triggered. Neighbors, alerted by the noise, assisted the victim.
According to the PJ, the “investigation collected blood traces at the crime scene, identifying the suspect at the time through DNA examinations.”
Later, the victim identified the detainee photographically, who was in an “irregular situation in France.”
Following the crime, the man initially fled to Italy and then to Portugal.
The foreign national will also appear before the Lisbon Court of Appeal for the application of a coercion measure.
