A 57-year-old man wanted in Brazil for a homicide has been detained by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in the Cascais area. The crime took place over 20 years ago, in March 2005, in the state of Minas Gerais.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the PJ announced the arrest of a “foreign national under an international arrest warrant issued by the Brazilian judicial authorities for committing a homicide in March 2005, in a city in the State of Minas Gerais.”
According to the authorities, “for reasons not fully clarified, the suspect surprised the victim, shooting and killing them with multiple gunshots.”
The man was sentenced to 12 years in prison. On December 2nd, the PJ received an Interpol ‘red notice’ and has since engaged in information exchanges with Brazilian authorities, which facilitated the location and arrest of the aggressor.
The PJ discovered that the suspect arrived in Portugal in September 2017. He was living irregularly in the country with other foreign nationals and working without official documents.
The foreign national is to appear before the Lisbon Court of Appeal for the application of a coercive measure.
