Man who killed aunt and injured grandmother in the Azores sentenced to internment

The Central Civil and Criminal Court of Ponta Delgada in the Azores has sentenced a man to a committal period ranging from three to sixteen years for the killing of his aunt and the attempted murder of his grandmother.

On April 24, 2025, the court ruled that the defendant would be committed to an appropriate facility for treatment and to mitigate his dangerousness for a minimum of three years and a maximum of sixteen years. This decision pertains to two counts of homicide, one completed and the other attempted, according to a statement from the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Azores District.

The incidents occurred on May 31, 2024, in the municipality of Ponta Delgada, involving the defendant and his relatives, namely his aunt and grandmother, with whom he resided.

At the time of the offenses, the defendant was reportedly in an altered state of consciousness, experiencing delusional symptoms during an acute psychotic episode, triggered by the consumption of psychoactive substances, the statement noted.

The court imposed the security measure due to the severe nature of the acts, resulting in the death of one victim, while the other survived thanks to hospital assistance, it highlighted.

It is worth noting that, last year, when announcing the arrest, the PJ disclosed that the man, then 27, had killed his 51-year-old aunt. His 78-year-old grandmother suffered serious injuries during the crime, which involved the use of various objects.

The investigation was led by the Public Prosecutor of Ponta Delgada of the Azores DIAP, in conjunction with the Judicial Police.
