A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of shooting two men aged 53 and 56, one of whom is a healthcare professional, on the night of October 17 in Leiria.
“One of the victims, a doctor by profession, was struck by shots from an air gun (commonly known as an airsoft gun), in the back, eyebrow, and arm. The other victim suffered minor injuries from a physical altercation with the suspect,” detailed the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) in a statement to the press this Friday.
Authorities noted that the men were treated “in a hospital environment and were immediately discharged.”
Despite the aggressor being a former patient of one of the victims and having a diagnosed mental illness, the PJ emphasized that “the crime occurred outside of the hospital context, with no current connection to the victims’ professions, nor to the medical and/or hospital community.”
The man was brought before a magistrate for a preliminary judicial hearing and was remanded in custody.
A healthcare professional, shot on the night of Friday in Leiria, “is doing well” and has already been discharged, said the board of directors of the Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Leiria Region today.

The board of directors of the Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Leiria Region stated at the time that the healthcare professional was assessed in the Emergency Service of Hospital Santo André (HSA).
In a statement, the organization condemned and lamented the act of violence that occurred that Friday night, “outside the hospital premises but which involved a healthcare professional” from the institution.
“The board will provide all necessary cooperation to the competent authorities investigating the case,” it added, reaffirming its “total commitment to defending its professionals, not tolerating any form of violence against those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.”
The scene was attended by the Leiria Volunteer Firefighters, the Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER), and the Public Security Police (PSP).
