Man who stabbed police officer in Prior Velho is put in preventive detention

The man who stabbed a Public Security Police (PSP) officer in the neck last Tuesday in Prior Velho, Sacavém, is now under preventive detention, authorities announced on Thursday.

In a statement to the press, the PSP stated that the 50-year-old man is suspected of attempted murder, while his 49-year-old wife and 17-year-old son were arrested for resistance and coercion against an officer.

“These arrests followed the intervention of an officer who was off duty and witnessed a serious traffic violation. He requested the identification of one of the detainees, who immediately hurled insults and threats and violently resisted the legitimate police intervention,” the statement outlined.

The suspect, “despite numerous warnings to desist in his conduct,” did not “comply with police orders, which led to his arrest.”

However, the man attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle, prompting the officer to remove him from the driver’s seat. At that moment, the detainee used a “medium-sized knife” to attack the officer, striking him “on the occipital area of the head, fortunately resulting only in a cut about 5 cm long.”

Following the attack, the suspect’s wife and son approached “actively and violently” to prevent the arrest, leading to their own detention for resistance and coercion against an officer.

The three detainees appeared before the Tribunal Judicial da Comarca de Lisboa Norte on Wednesday. The mother and son were subject to identity and residence terms, while the assailant was placed in preventive detention.
