A 51-year-old man experiencing a psychotic episode fatally shot his wife, also 51, in the early hours of Friday, September 5, at the Casa de Saúde de Santa Catarina in Porto, where he had been admitted the previous day, according to a source from the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) speaking to Notícias ao Minuto.
The alert was raised at around 3 a.m. “Two shots were heard; when they arrived at the room, the woman was dead, and he had the gun in his hand with a gunshot injury to the chest,” the source reported.
The death of the woman, who had been authorized to stay overnight with her husband despite his diagnosis of a psychotic episode, was declared at the scene.
The suspect was transported in critical condition to the Hospital de Santo António in Porto, the reference hospital for the Aldoar area, where the health facility is located.
Contacted by Lusa, a source from Santo António said only that the case is “under judicial secrecy,” declining to provide further information.
Although the crime occurred in Porto, the couple resided in Felgueiras.
As it involves a firearm-related homicide, the case was handed over to the Polícia Judiciária (PJ).
It is currently unknown how the man, hospitalized with a psychotic episode, gained access to the firearm used in the crime.
Meanwhile, according to the agency Lusa, the PJ confirmed they are investigating a homicide followed by a suicide attempt, occurring early this morning at the Casa de Saúde de Santa Catarina.

As reported by the Jornal de Notícias, the suspect is the entrepreneur and former president of FC Felgueiras 1932, Pedro Martins.
Pedro Martins is said to be a partner at Irmalex and Irmatim, companies located in the industrial area of Sendim, in Felgueiras.
The entrepreneur’s mental health issues, which led him to the Casa de Saúde de Santa Catarina on Thursday night, were reportedly already diagnosed and known to those close to him.
