
The Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of architect Manuel Botelho, extending heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
According to FAUP’s biography, Manuel Botelho was born in 1939 in Vila de Rua, Moimenta da Beira, Viseu district. He completed his higher education in Italy, earning a degree in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1972, and a degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture at La Sapienza in 1978, under the guidance of Ludovico Quaroni.
Botelho practiced his profession in Portugal, teaching at the School of Fine Arts of Porto (ESBAP) from 1985 to 2009 and at FAUP in the fields of Project and Theory of Architecture.
Described as a “discreet and attentive teacher,” Manuel Botelho “significantly contributed to the understanding of what is now recognized as the Porto School,” as noted by FAUP.
In addition to his teaching career, his “vast and unique work” was honored with the National Architecture Award Keil do Amaral (First Works) in 1989 for the Casa Dr. Barroso Pires. He was also nominated for the Mies van der Rohe award in 1994 and was a finalist for the Secil Architecture Prize in 2002.
The wake for Manuel Botelho takes place today from 3:00 PM at the Church of Antas, in Porto.
The funeral mass will be held at the same location on Friday at 10:00 AM, after which he will be buried in Vila de Rua, Moimenta da Beira, where he was born.
