Manuel Pão-Mole, former mayor of Viana do Alentejo, has died.

The local government paid tribute to Manuel António Rosa Pão-Mole in a statement on its website, noting that he served as mayor from 1979 to 1989, becoming the second president of the municipality following the revolution of April 25, 1974.

Originally from and residing in Viana do Alentejo, the former mayor led the administration through three terms, with two lasting three years and one lasting four years.

Information from the National Election Commission indicates that Manuel Pão-Mole was consistently elected through the former Aliança Povo Unido (APU), a coalition between the Portuguese Communist Party and the Portuguese Democratic Movement – Electoral Democratic Commission.

In the statement, the Viana do Alentejo City Council announced a day of municipal mourning and lowered the municipality’s flag to half-mast “in his memory and as recognition of his public service dedication.”

“The municipality expresses its deep sorrow for his passing, extending heartfelt condolences to his family and friends,” the statement added.
