The night of St. John’s Eve brings together the three main figures of the State: the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the President of Parliament, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, and the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro.

This is a tradition, with festivities and hammers, carried out by several Presidents of the Republic since the 1990s when Mário Soares occupied the Belém Palace in Lisbon.

Today, Marcelo, Aguiar-Branco and Montenegro will first gather in a restaurant for the São João dinner of the municipality of Porto, with the mayor, Rui Moreira.

Afterwards, they’ll watch the fireworks display overlooking the Douro River, followed by a street party with dancers, balloons, hammers and sardines.
