The President of the Republic stated that the United States President, Donald Trump, currently acts as a “Soviet asset,” by favoring the Russian Federation in the war against Ukraine.
Today, when questioned about the matter in Faro, the PS leader, José Luís Carneiro, expressed disbelief that Portugal could face penalties from the United States due to this issue.
While refraining from commenting on the head of state’s words, the Secretary-General of the PS expressed his “great appreciation” and “immense esteem” for the President of the Republic and praised the “important work Marcelo Rebelo has done for the country.”
José Luís Carneiro said that he witnessed, during his accompaniment of the President at the June 10th celebrations in the United States, the “great respect” relationship Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has with the country, many American institutions, and the Portuguese community there.
He stated, “I know well the awareness the President of the Republic has about Portugal’s roles in the world and about who its allies are,” asserting that “those who appear very hurt” by Marcelo’s words are those who challenge the values historically defended by the United States.
When asked if he fears “negative repercussions” for the country from U.S. President Donald Trump due to the President’s words, José Luís Carneiro answered: “no.”
Marcelo stated that Donald Trump acted as a Russian “asset” last Wednesday while taking part in PSD’s University Summer program, an initiative for training young party members in Castelo de Vide (Portalegre), where he made an unexpected appearance after a planned videoconference intervention.
In a session titled “The President’s Responses,” the head of state made an initial intervention addressing the international situation, highlighting Donald Trump as an example of a new style of political leaderships, more emotional and direct in citizen contact, without mediation, in a world where the power balance has also shifted.
He stated, “With something peculiar and complex: the leader of the greatest superpower in the world, objectively, is a Soviet or Russian asset. He functions as an asset,” said the head of state.
The President of the Republic emphasized that this is not “an alliance based on friendship, economic complicity, ideology, or doctrine.”
He stated, “I am saying that, objectively, the new American leadership has strategically favored the Russian Federation,” referring to the actions of the U.S. president in the Ukraine war.
He continued, “In other words, they have shifted from being allies of one side to arbitrators of the challenge,” adding that this is an arbitrator who only wishes to negotiate with one team, excluding Ukraine and Europe, who had to “impose themselves” in recent talks.
