Marcelo announces the promulgation of an extraordinary competition for teachers

Arriving in Berlin for an official visit, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told journalists he received the relevant diploma this Wednesday. Considering it “very urgent” for the start of the academic year, he plans to endorse it this afternoon.

“I will sign it here to ensure it comes into effect [retroactively], with effect from September 1 of this year,” emphasized Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

When asked if he was reassured by the Education Minister’s statements that at least 98% of schools would provide students with lessons in all subjects, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa replied: “We’ll see.”

“We’ll see the response to the extraordinary recruitment process. Hopefully, the reaction will be positive, allowing the goal of having the greatest number of students start the school year on schedule,” he stated.

On August 28, the government approved in a Council of Ministers meeting a decree-law opening an extraordinary recruitment process offering nearly 1,800 positions in areas facing more difficulty attracting teachers.

The approximately 1,800 positions focus on 10 Educational Zone Boards, with the majority – around 1,100 – intended for schools in Lisbon, stated the Education Minister after meeting with unions. He added that 20% of the positions would be available in the Setúbal region, and the remaining 10% for schools in Alentejo and Algarve.
