President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa emphasized the importance of creating a social dialogue environment in Lisbon after an event with the Portuguese Olympic Committee. He stated, “Strike is a right,” emphasizing the need for social dialogue amidst the general strike called by CGTP and UGT for December 11, and the upcoming parliamentary debate on labor legislation.
Marcelo expressed, “I always defended social dialogue with previous and current governments, hoping for dialogues between parties to achieve maximum consensus.” He noted that the general strike involves a broad spectrum of workers and unions, highlighting its significance.
He pointed out that the revision of labor laws initiated by the government in July is “far from conclusion” as it awaits deliberation in Parliament, currently engaged with the State Budget until November 28, and within social dialogue forums. “The government has shown openness for dialogue, and with the general strike a month away, there is still time for discussions,” he added.
Rebelo de Sousa described Portugal as striving to maintain stability amid global challenges, with low unemployment and robust economic growth. He emphasized fostering a spirit of consensus and dialogue, rather than division, as crucial for progress.
