Marcelo calls for solidarity with refugees in Portugal.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, emphasized today the importance of showing solidarity towards refugees seeking shelter in Portugal, urging actions reflecting this sentiment and rejecting “self-centered views of the community.”

In a message posted on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, marking World Refugee Day, the head of state highlighted that “the persistence and exacerbation of conflicts, the climate crisis, and the complex and dangerous interrelations among these issues, as well as recent cuts in humanitarian aid, compel more than 122 million people to leave their homes in search of safety and protection in this year 2025.”

Emphasizing that the United Nations (UN) calls for solidarity with refugees, the Portuguese President aligns himself with this appeal.

“This is the moment to demonstrate solidarity towards refugees seeking Portugal, to honor their stories, and to show unwavering support for their plight,” the message states.

The Portuguese head of state warns that this solidarity manifests “through actions, including the creation of dignified reception conditions and the promotion of protection policies.”

“Only then can a principle of shared humanity be prioritized over self-centered community views,” he adds.
