Marcelo confirms: First-cycle textbooks do not have to be returned

The President of the Republic has enacted a decree this Friday determining that first-cycle students are not required to return the schoolbooks provided to them.

Marcelo thus approves the amendment to Law No. 47/2006 of August 28, which had already been announced by the Government on September 22, in a statement signed by the Secretary of State and Deputy for Education, Alexandre Homem Cristo.

The decision emphasized the importance for children of this school age to “write, handle, and mark” their books freely.

Students can, therefore, use the books they were given “fully and without limitations,” as they will not be subject to “reuse.”

The decree law signed by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is available on the Presidential website.

“The President of the Republic has promulgated the Government’s decree that amends Law No. 47/2006 of August 28, exempting first-cycle primary education students from the obligation to return to the State the textbooks in physical format provided free of charge,” it reads.

It should be remembered that free textbooks are available to students attending public education or private education establishments with an association contract.
