The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, today declared his support on behalf of Portugal for Moldova’s bid to join the European Union and announced his intention to visit the country soon.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking at the Belém Palace in Lisbon at a joint press conference with the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, whom he received today at the start of his state visit to Portugal.

On the Republic of Moldova’s application to join the European Union, the head of state said: “Portugal supports this dream of yours”.

Thanking his counterpart for an invitation to visit Moldova, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his intention to make the visit “later this month or early next month”.

The Republic of Moldova, a country bordering Ukraine and Romania, formally applied to join the European Union in March 2022, a decision that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 of that year.

In June 2022, Moldova was granted the status of candidate country for the European Union.
