The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed optimistic views regarding the recent commercial agreement between the United States and the European Union. Speaking at the Lajes Air Base on Terceira island, he highlighted the benefits of strengthened cooperation between the two regions. Marcelo noted that President Donald Trump’s realization of the importance of America-Europe collaboration is a positive development, with the agreement being advantageous for both sides.
Marcelo emphasized that recent economic indicators from the second quarter demonstrate the mutual benefits of such collaboration for the United States, Europe, and Portugal. He stated, “Geopolitics play a crucial role in economic decisions. Those involved in economic activities, from workers to entrepreneurs, recognize the difference between decision-making amid uncertainty and instability versus a stable environment. The first quarter was marked by instability.”
The President further noted that such decisions are often temporary and reversible, requiring careful analysis based on changing circumstances.
Marcelo underscored the geopolitical significance of the Azores by commencing his visit to the archipelago at Lajes Air Base, a move he described as a politically significant gesture. He countered the notion that the United States has lost interest in the Azores, recalling a past assurance from Donald Trump that such views are unfounded.
Regarding the Lajes agreement, Marcelo indicated there is room for dialogue and stressed the importance of discussions within the joint commission between the Portuguese and American governments.
The President also highlighted the strategic importance of the Azores in relations with other Western partners.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spent the morning at Lajes Air Base accompanied by José Manuel Bolieiro, President of the Regional Government of the Azores, Defense Minister Nuno Melo, and Air Force Chief of Staff General João Cartaxo Alves. During his visit, he toured the facilities and attended an exhibition commemorating 20 years since the acquisition of the Air Force’s EH-101 Merlin search and rescue helicopter.
The trade agreement, reached on Sunday, imposes a 15% tariff on American imports of European goods. Additionally, the EU has committed to purchasing $750 billion (approximately €642 billion) worth of American energy, aiming to reduce reliance on Russian gas. The EU will also invest an additional $600 billion (€514 billion) and increase its procurement of military equipment.
Following the announcement, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro commented that the agreement provides economic predictability and stability while preventing escalation. However, he warned of the new challenges it presents.
