Marcelo evokes the “pioneering role” of journalist Antónia de Sousa

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, extended his condolences on Friday to the family of journalist Antónia de Sousa, who passed away at the age of 84.

“The President of the Republic acknowledges the pioneering role of Antónia de Sousa as a journalist and defender of press freedom and opinion pluralism, offering heartfelt condolences to her family.” This statement is available on the Presidency of the Republic’s website.

Antónia de Sousa, a coauthor of the television series ‘Nome Mulher’ created after the April 25 revolution and a pioneer of the profession, died on Thursday in Cascais at the age of 84, according to her son.

Born on July 22, 1940, in Santa Marinha, Vila Nova de Gaia, she was a co-creator with Maria Antónia Palla of the programs ‘Nome Mulher,’ focusing on women’s conditions and status, and ‘Direito de Família,’ both broadcast by RTP following the revolution of April 25.

The journalist’s funeral will be held on Saturday at 10:30 AM. Her body will be transported to the Olivais Cemetery, where the cremation ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 AM, as per her expressed wishes, her son mentioned.
