The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, mourned the death of General Garcia dos Santos today, stating that Portugal has lost a key figure from the inception of the April 25 Revolution and the consolidation of democracy.
General Amadeu Garcia dos Santos, one of the military figures involved in the April 25, 1974, revolution and a former Chief of the Army General Staff, passed away today at 89 years old, confirmed an official source of the military branch to Lusa.
In a message posted on the official Presidency of the Republic website, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed “enormous sadness” over Garcia dos Santos’s death and sent his “heartfelt condolences” to the general’s family during this difficult time.
“Portugal lost a reference point from the initial moment and the advancement towards the consolidation of the April 25 Revolution and the emerging democracy,” stated the head of state and supreme commander of the Armed Forces.
The note highlights that General Garcia dos Santos “became one of the fundamental figures of the April 25 Revolution and, later, in holding high military positions,” having been the head of the Military House of the first President of the Republic elected after the revolution and Chief of the Army General Staff, “serving the military institution with dedication.”
