President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his solidarity with the family of the person who died due to the Cláudia depression that struck Albufeira this morning, according to an official note from the Presidency of the Republic. He also extended wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured individuals.
An extreme wind phenomenon hit the city of Albufeira this morning, resulting in one death, two severe injuries, and over 20 minor injuries, as stated by a source from Civil Protection. The source reported that the wind caused damages at Albufeira’s camping park, leading to one death, four minor injuries, and one severe injury. It also affected a hotel unit, causing 19 injuries, including one severe.
A source from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) told Lusa that radar images strongly suggest the likelihood of a tornado, given the damages, but the situation is still under evaluation.
The event occurred around 11 a.m., and meteorologist Paula Leitão noted that the atmospheric conditions in the Algarve would remain favorable for more such phenomena until 3 p.m., although it does not necessarily mean they will reach land. According to her, there is still “a lot of activity over the sea,” with such phenomena occurring occasionally and unexpectedly, making it impossible to predict when and where they might happen.
