Marcelo expresses “sorrow” and “deep consternation” over tragedy in the Douro

The President of the Republic has agreed with the Government to declare a day of national mourning on Saturday in memory of the GNR (National Republican Guard) officers who died today in a helicopter accident.

“It was with deep dismay that President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa learned of the tragic air accident involving a helicopter transporting members of the Initial Attack Helicopter Team from the Emergency Protection and Rescue Unit (UEPS) of the National Republican Guard (GNR), which resulted in the death of four GNR officers and one missing officer, who had been on duty at a fire in the Baião area,” reads the statement released on the Presidency of the Republic’s website.

“The President of the Republic, who followed this terrible accident with the Prime Minister at the Operational Command Post in Lamego, and with the Minister of Internal Administration, agreed with the Government to set a day of national mourning for tomorrow, August 31,” it added.
