The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has enacted the government’s decree establishing an extraordinary pension supplement on Friday, July 18.
The enactment follows the government’s approval in a Cabinet meeting of a new extraordinary supplement for all pensions up to 1,567.50 euros, ranging between one hundred and two hundred euros, to be paid in September, as announced by Luís Montenegro during the State of the Nation debate.
For the ‘bonus’ to be provided, it awaits publication in the Official Gazette, which will indicate the effective date.
The initiative received both praise and criticism, including from the Socialist Party’s secretary-general, José Luís Carneiro.
“It is extraordinary support given in September but withdrawn in January,” he stated in an interview with CNN Portugal, explaining, “For pensions of 600 euros, this amounts to 36 cents per day. Thus, you can buy a coffee every three days. For pensions of one thousand euros, it gives 23 cents a day. That’s what we are discussing,” he emphasized in an interview with CNN Portugal following yesterday’s debate in the Assembly of the Republic.
