The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, expressed his “deepest condolences” to the family and friends of Álvaro Monjardino, who passed away on Friday. He also informed that he had asked the Representative of the Republic in the Azores to represent him at the funeral ceremonies.
In a note published on the Presidency of the Republic’s website this Saturday, the head of state highlighted the “outstanding personality in political and cultural terms” of the social democrat and former president of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores. “Álvaro Monjardino was one of the Founders of the Autonomous Azores,” it reads.
“The President recalls the heartfelt tribute he presided over in 2021, as part of the celebrations of the 45th anniversary of the Azores’ Autonomy, with the inauguration of the Álvaro Monjardino Library in Horta, Faial Island,” the note further emphasizes. Marcelo also expresses “national gratitude for the historic role that Álvaro Monjardino played, from the 1970s until the 21st century, in service of the Azorean people and Portugal.”
The President of the Republic also informed that he “asked the Representative of the Republic to represent him at the funeral ceremonies today and tomorrow.”
