President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa addressed journalists outside the Faculty of Letters at the University of Lisbon regarding a dermatologist at Hospital Santa Maria who reportedly earned 51,000 euros in just one day of work. On Monday, the dermatologist declined to comment, citing a lack of data.
“Today I learned that an inquiry has been opened by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and that there is also an investigation by the Health Inspectorate, which means that the competent authorities are determining what happened,” the head of state responded.
He further noted, “Moreover, the Health Inspectorate stated—effectively the Ministry [of Health]—that there would be an investigation into additional activities or actions beyond those normally scheduled in the operations of institutions, regarding all health establishments.”
The President emphasized the decision to broaden the focus “beyond the specific case” of the dermatologist at Hospital de Santa Maria and to examine whether similar occurrences might be happening “in other domains, areas, and institutions” of the National Health Service (SNS).
