The Chief of the Presidential Office, Fernando Frutuoso de Melo, confirmed on Wednesday that the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, currently hospitalized at Saint John Hospital in Porto, will be discharged today, but only after lunch.
“He will have lunch and then we will leave,” Fernando Frutuoso de Melo stated to journalists during a press conference regarding the President’s health status.
When asked whether Marcelo would leave before or after 1 p.m., he laughed and replied: “I think he is eager to leave as soon as possible”.
Maria João Baptista, president of Saint John Hospital, added that the head of state “ate well and will have to undergo some tests” and is expected to leave the hospital “within a few hours”.
The Chief of the Presidential Office also mentioned that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will head directly to Belém, the official residence of the President, and will be transported there by car.

Regarding the care the head of state will now need, Fernando Frutuoso de Melo clarified that “there is a permanent medical support office in Belém”, ensuring the President “will be accompanied at all times by both the medical and nursing teams.”
Concerning the Portuguese President’s agenda, it was announced that the trip to Spain has been “rescheduled for February”, but the exact date is yet to be determined. As for the Vatican, dates have not been confirmed.
It is noted that the President was admitted on Monday night to Saint John Hospital in Porto, where he underwent emergency surgery for a strangulated hernia.
The surgery, which lasted approximately 1.5 hours, was successful. However, following a two-day hospitalization, the head of state will need to remain at rest for several weeks, resulting in the postponement of planned trips to Spain and the Vatican.
