
The President of the Republic expressed his deep sorrow over the passing of António Moraes Machado, describing him not just as a friend but as a constant example, notably for his humane, generous, and authentic reinvention throughout life to serve the nation and the people of Trás-os-Montes, as stated in an official note on the Presidency’s website.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled António Moraes Machado’s work as a pediatrician and volunteer in Africa, where he cared for the lives of new generations, and as a mayor, where he served Mogadouro for twelve years.
Moreover, he was a promoter of culture and local identity, tirelessly initiating projects to highlight the region’s rich collective heritage.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa extended his deepest condolences to the family and friends.
António Moraes Machado, the former mayor of Mogadouro, passed away on Friday at the age of 89, after a prolonged illness, according to the local Misericórdia’s provider.
João Henriques noted, “Dr. António Moraes Machado passed away today at the São João Batista Residential Structure for Elderly People, part of the Mogadouro Misericórdia, from a prolonged illness.”
Born on November 10, 1935, Machado retired at the age of 65, embarking on his 12-year tenure as a mayor (three terms) from 2001 to 2013 with the PSD.
The former Mogadouro mayor was a pediatrician throughout his professional life, working at Santo António Hospital in Porto.
He also participated in several humanitarian missions in Africa, including in Guinea.
As an author and researcher of popular culture, particularly in Mogadouro and the Planalto Mirandês, he was a key promoter of the ‘Monografia de Mogadouro.’
