The President of Portugal has expressed his condolences following the death in service of Corporal Pedro Manata e Silva, a member of the Coastal and Border Control Unit of the National Republican Guard (GNR). Silva was killed by assailants on the Guadiana River while performing his duties to uphold the law and society’s welfare, according to a statement on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic.
President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has personally extended his deepest condolences to the widow, children, and bereaved family, as well as to all friends and the GNR itself during this particularly difficult time for all its military and civilian personnel.
Furthermore, the head of state is monitoring the status of the three injured officers, offering them his solidarity and support, and hoping for their swift recovery.
The incident occurred on Monday night when three GNR officers were injured, and one officer was killed, after their vessel was rammed by a high-speed boat on the Guadiana River. The GNR suspects that the vessel may be linked to drug trafficking activities.
