With less than two months left until the presidential elections scheduled for January 18, and approximately three and a half months before stepping down on March 9, 2026, Marcelo conducts his 170th foreign trip. This tally includes official visits as well as all other travel for various reasons, divided by country, even if done consecutively.
The head of state arrives in the Principality late this afternoon, but the entire official agenda will take place on Friday. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be received in the morning at the Prince’s Palace in Monaco by Prince Albert II, in a ceremony featuring military honors, anthems, and a review, followed by an audience, lunch, and the signing of a bilateral cooperation agreement.
In the early afternoon, the President of the Republic will visit a photographic exhibition about King D. Carlos, who shared a passion for oceanography with Prince Albert I, the great-great-grandfather of the current monarch, and participate in the unveiling of a bust of the former Portuguese monarch in the Saint-Martin gardens near the palace.
Following this, the head of state will tour the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, the same venue where he will host a reception for the Portuguese community in the Principality later in the afternoon, before returning to Lisbon.
According to a note released by the Presidency of the Republic on the official website, this state visit “is a testament to the historical and friendly ties between the two countries, as well as the desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation on matters of common interest, with a focus on the preservation of oceans and biodiversity.”
