A written message posted on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic highlights the commemoration of a distinguished military achievement: the conquest of Lisbon in 1147 by Afonso Henriques, Patron of the Army, on this date.
“On this festive day, the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces pays a heartfelt tribute to all those who have served and are serving in the esteemed Portuguese Army,” the statement reads.
The head of state extends “a special message to all Army troops currently deployed abroad serving Portugal.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa wishes “success to the Army in continuing to dignify, honor, and shape Portugal.”
