The President of the Republic “spoke by phone with the wife of the seriously injured man in the Guarda fire, in which a former local official died, to inquire about the husband’s health condition,” an official note on the presidency’s page states.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa wished the man, who is currently hospitalized at the University Health Local Unit of Coimbra due to burn injuries, “a speedy recovery from his severe injuries.”
The man suffered severe injuries in the fire that broke out Friday morning in Pêra do Moço, in the municipality of Guarda, and spread to the municipalities of Trancoso and Pinhel.
The same fire claimed the life of Carlos Dâmaso, approximately 40 years old, former president of the Parish Council of Vila Franca do Deão in that municipality, who died combating the flames.
According to the website of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), 223 personnel remain on-site, supported by 82 vehicles and one aerial unit.
