“The President of the Republic extends his heartfelt condolences to the family and admirers of Anita Guerreiro, a figure of Portuguese music for many decades, leaving a mark of friendliness and popularity that touched multiple generations,” reads a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.
Anita Guerreiro passed away this Sunday, shortly after midnight, at Casa do Artista in Lisbon. The death of the 89-year-old actress and fado singer was confirmed on social media by the social solidarity private institution where she had lived since 2018.
The death occurred during her sleep, according to reports. However, details of the funeral arrangements remain unknown, pending the arrival of the singer’s daughter, Pepita Cardinali, from abroad.
“Last night, the unforgettable Anita Guerreiro departed. A lady with a distinctive voice and immense talent, she touched everyone with the love she conveyed in every word, in every gesture. Without pretensions, as she proudly emphasized, she was complete on stage, in front of the screens, and in the daily lives of all those who crossed her path,” lamented Casa do Artista on Instagram.
“Her voice may be silenced, but the legacy of this great lady of the Portuguese artistic scene will remain forever. Rest in peace, dear Anita Guerreiro,” the organization added.
In 2018, Anita Guerreiro shared with Notícias ao Minuto that she was not afraid of dying since she had “lived everything there was to live.”
“I have to go someday. I’ve lived everything I had to live. I’ve done everything: theater, cinema, television,” she said.
Moreover, she opined that if her life were a magazine, it would be titled “Que a sorte nos proteja” (“May luck protect us”).
In 2023, television host Manuel Luís Goucha visited Casa do Artista to meet Anita Guerreiro, then 86 years old. Regarding her views on death, the fado singer admitted, “I often pray: ‘God, take me, but don’t make me suffer‘.”
